A kitchen remodel is the single project that changes how a home feels most dramatically — and in Puerto Vallarta's coastal climate, it demands more thought than most. The wrong countertop choice etches and stains within a year. The wrong cabinet substrate warps in the humidity. The right design, done right, outlasts trends and transforms the way a family or a group of guests experiences a space.
At Bernal Architecture Studio, we have designed and remodeled kitchens in Versalles, the Hotel Zone, Nuevo Vallarta, and residential neighborhoods across Puerto Vallarta and Nayarit. Here are five real projects from our portfolio — each one chosen because it solved a different problem and taught us something worth sharing.
A note on tropical materials before we begin
The best-performing materials we use in Puerto Vallarta kitchens: quartz or quartzite countertops (non-porous, mold-resistant), large-format porcelain tile (no grout to maintain), marine-grade plywood for cabinet carcasses, and melamine-faced chipboard (MFC) or MDF for open shelving. We deliberately avoid marble countertops in this climate — they etch with citrus and stain without constant sealing.
Transformation 1: Casa Lagom — Balanced, Calm, and Built to Last
Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco · 2025 · brnlarchitecture.com/casa-lagom-a-remodeling-project-in-puerto-vallarta
The Brief
In a new home delivered with subpar materials and a characterless interior, the client entrusted Bernal with a comprehensive remodel. The name says it all — Lagom is a Swedish concept meaning just the right amount: not too much, not too little. The kitchen needed to embody this philosophy entirely.
The Challenge
Starting with a thorough inspection to identify and correct all existing construction defects before a single design decision was made. Every flaw had to be addressed at the substrate level — not cosmetically concealed — before the design could begin.

The Design Decision
The kitchen design offers bespoke storage solutions that address the challenge of compact urban living. Large window frames were treated as architectural elements — almost like paintings framing the tranquil garden beyond. American oak, oyster quartz countertops, and white cabinetry create an atmosphere of peace. The integrated wine cellar with oak sides and stainless steel shelves adds a rugged, personal touch that speaks directly to the client's character.

Materials: American oak, oyster quartz countertops, white cabinetry, stainless steel wine cellar accents
The Result
A home that finally matches the life its owner wants to live — calm, refined, and deeply personal. The kitchen anchors the ground floor and sets the tone for every space that follows.

Scope: Full home remodel, including kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms
Transformation 2: APT Aria — Sleek and Modern in 60 Days
Villas Vallarta, Hotel Zone, Puerto Vallarta · 2025 · brnlarchitecture.com/apt-aria-kitchen-remodeling-in-puerto-vallarta
The Brief
Canadian clients Julie and Rino had just acquired a condo in the Hotel Zone and needed a complete design and construction renovation executed in just two months — while they remained in Canada. The ask: 'A very sleek kitchen design, modern but at the same time adapted to the location.'
The Challenge
An ambitious two-month timeline for a full design-build renovation, managed entirely remotely. Every decision — materials, finishes, contractors — had to be communicated clearly and executed without the client present on site.

The Design Decision
Bernal delivered a comprehensive renovation within the timeline, transforming an outdated condo kitchen into a clean, functional modern space. The design leaned into sleek white surfaces and contemporary hardware — timeless choices that would read as fresh to family guests and long-term residents alike. The clients were extremely happy, and the project became a testament to remote project management done right.

Materials: White contemporary cabinetry, quartz countertops, modern hardware, integrated appliances. PerfectSense Lacquer Boards: This advanced lacquer provides a smooth, closed surface that is resistant to heat and moisture. The boards offer excellent durability and fingerprint resistance.
Antibacterial Properties: A special treatment in the boards inhibits bacterial growth on the surface, promoting a healthier kitchen environment.
The Result
'They transformed our outdated kitchen into a beautiful and functional space. They listened carefully to our needs and offered creative solutions I hadn't even considered.' Delivered on time, managed remotely, zero surprises. - Julie and Rino.

Scope: Full kitchen + condo renovation, 2-month delivery
Transformation 3: Pearl Kitchen — The Family Heart Reimagined
Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco · 2023 · brnlarchitecture.com/pearl-kitchen-remodeling-in-puerto-vallarta
The Brief
A dear friend wanted to surprise his mother with a kitchen remodel — a space built in the early 1990s that had always been the gathering heart of the family home. The brief was emotional as much as architectural: preserve the warmth, gain the function.
The Challenge
The original kitchen was isolated from the living and dining areas, limiting its social role in the home. Any expansion required rethinking the architectural layout — not just the finishes.

The Design Decision
Bernal redesigned the floor plan to connect the kitchen directly to the living-dining room, making it the social anchor of the home. The layout became an L-shape with full-height cabinetry and a support furniture piece for additional appliance storage. The material palette stayed deliberately light: American oak cabinetry and white quartz countertops, generating a sense of cleanliness and ease even in a kitchen used daily by multiple generations.

Materials: American oak cabinetry, white quartz countertops, integrated appliances
The Result
A kitchen that had served one generation now serves three — open, welcoming, and designed to accumulate new memories. The L-layout maximized storage without sacrificing the newly created connection to the living room.

Scope: Full remodel + layout expansion
Transformation 4: APT Sybaris — The Kitchen as the Heart of the Home
Versalles, Puerto Vallarta · 2025 · brnlarchitecture.com/apt-sybaris-a-remodeling-project-in-puerto-vallarta
The Brief
Located in Versalles — Puerto Vallarta's most culturally rich neighborhood — this apartment was redesigned around a single conviction: the kitchen should be the heart of the space, a place for friends, family, and shared meals.
Client Darin Slyman: 'I need a bigger space. I want to invite friends and my mother who will occasionally visit.'
The Challenge
A 75 m² apartment with a conventional layout that compartmentalized the kitchen away from social life. The spatial challenge was creating openness and connection without the footprint to do it conventionally.

The Design Decision
Bernal pursued an earthy minimalism — free of hard edges and shiny surfaces. The kitchen was reorganized to open toward the social zone, with quartz surfaces and restrained detailing that refuses to compete with the architecture. With the expansion of the island, the kitchen became the first thing you notice — and the thing you remember.

Materials: Quartz countertops, matte-finish cabinetry, earthy tones, integrated storage solutions
The Result
Client review:
'Romel and Manuel provided a speedy answer to my needs. Their professionalism gave me the peace of mind I needed to relax and enjoy the process. All my needs were addressed, and they got the concept and quality I was looking for.' The kitchen — once a closed-off room — is now the reason people stay. - Darin Slyman

Scope: Full apartment remodel, including kitchen reconfiguration and Murphy bed.
Transformation 5: APT Deva — Maximum Life in 65 m²
Puerto Vallarta · 2024 · brnlarchitecture.com/apt-deva-puerto-vallarta
The Brief
María came to Bernal with a 65 m² (700 sqft) apartment and a specific set of demands that most designers would have considered contradictory: she needed ample storage, a proper kitchen with a hood and a built-in oven, a coffee bar station, a hand-wash station, storage for cleaning products, even a designated spot for her dog's things — all within a footprint that left no room for compromise. She was also considering selling the apartment in the future and wanted to maximize its value.
The Challenge
The original layout placed the kitchen where it couldn't function well — poor ventilation, inadequate storage, and no room for the built-in oven the client needed. Relocating a kitchen in a compact apartment means rerouting plumbing and gas, a significant structural decision that most renovation contractors avoid. Every square meter gained somewhere had to be accounted for somewhere else.

The Design Decision
Bernal relocated the kitchen entirely, opening up the layout and creating space for a custom modular system that served multiple functions at once. The coffee bar station doubles as a hand-wash station and houses storage for cleaning supplies and pet supplies — a single architectural element that eliminates the clutter of three separate zones. The kitchen itself received a proper hood installation, a built-in oven, and the material palette that defines the whole apartment: white tones and light woods inspired by the Sanskrit word Deva, meaning bright and divine presence.
The design philosophy — live longer, live powerfully, live a higher quality — guided every decision. Nothing was included that didn't earn its place. Nothing that earned its place was left out.
"When I told Romel Bernal that storage was essential for me, he proposed a custom storage system that could serve as a coffee bar station but also have a hand-wash station and more storage for cleaning equipment and all my dog needs." — María
The Result
Six functional zones — kitchen, coffee bar, hand-wash station, cleaning storage, laundry, and pet area — fitted into 65 m² without a single space feeling cramped. The apartment now performs like a home twice its size. María's own measure of success: a friend visited, fell asleep on the bed, and woke, saying the room felt like a genuine invitation to rest.

What it proves: Compact apartments in Puerto Vallarta are not a limitation — they are a design problem with a design solution. The kitchen relocation alone transformed the quality of the entire floor plan.
Materials: White lacquered cabinetry, light wood accents, white quartz surfaces, integrated appliances including built-in oven, stainless steel hood
Scope: Full apartment remodel including kitchen relocation, custom coffee bar + storage system, laundry integration
What Every Great Kitchen Remodel in Puerto Vallarta Has in Common
Across all five of these projects, a few principles held constant. Ventilation was always addressed first — a closed kitchen in Puerto Vallarta's humid climate without proper airflow is a maintenance problem waiting to happen. Moisture-resistant substrate went under every surface. Local artisan craftsmanship handled every detail that deserved attention. And in every case, integrating the design and construction process under one team — rather than coordinating between separate designers and contractors — produced better results, faster.
If any of these kitchens made you look around your own space differently, that might be a worthwhile sign.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Puerto Vallarta?
Kitchen remodeling costs in Puerto Vallarta range from approximately $8,000 to $60,000 USD, depending on the scope. A surface refresh — new cabinet doors, countertops, and backsplash — typically runs $8,000–$15,000 USD. A mid-range full remodel with new cabinetry ranges from $18,000–$35,000 USD. A high-end chef's kitchen with imported materials and a custom island can reach $40,000–$60,000 USD or more.
What kitchen materials work best in Puerto Vallarta's tropical climate?
The best kitchen materials for Puerto Vallarta's humid coastal climate are quartzite or quartz countertops (non-porous, mold-resistant), large-format porcelain tile, marine-grade plywood with lacquer for cabinetry, and teak or tropical hardwood for open shelving. Avoid marble — it etches and stains easily and requires frequent sealing in high-humidity environments.
How long does a kitchen remodel take in Puerto Vallarta?
A surface kitchen refresh typically takes 4–6 weeks. A full remodel with layout changes and custom cabinetry generally takes 6–12 weeks from design approval to completion. APT Aria, one of our 2025 projects, was completed in 8 weeks, including full design and construction — even with the clients in Canada throughout.
