CASA HALCYON

LOCATION: RIVIERA NAYARIT
TYPE: RESIDENCIAL
YEAR: 2026

Named for the mythical bird of tranquility, Casa Halcyone is a thoughtful architectural interpretation of coastal Mexican heritage, re-envisioned through the lens of soft minimalism. The residence is a visual study in balance, where the enduring appeal of the regional vernacular meets an aesthetic of quiet, contemporary refinement.

IN PROGRESS

Casa Halcyone is more than a dwelling; it is an environment designed for intentional,

slow living—a physical embodiment of peace on the Mexican coast.

VERNACULAR SHADING

The structure achieves its serene presence through an honest, harmonious contrast of materials. Primary volumes are set in smooth, monolithic stucco, providing a clean canvas that captures and diffuses the tropical light. This is beautifully anchored by the warmth of natural wood: a grand, arched entry is defined by a richly textured, carved door, establishing a sense of handcrafted permanence and depth.

The low-slung, tiled roof and deep, extended wood beam pergolas are not merely decorative; they are functional forms essential for sun mitigation. They cast dynamic shadows and create cool, shaded verandas, seamlessly extending the home's liveable space into the outdoors.

The architectural language maintains its integrity with a focus on essential form and tactile material contrast. The rough, off-white stucco planes and traditional clay-tiled rooflines frame the central outdoor living space, imbuing the scene with a timeless, grounding quality.

The centerpiece is the swimming pool, where the design seamlessly incorporates local textures and colors. The pool features a custom circular design, clad in deep turquoise tiles, which provides a striking, jewel-toned contrast to the surrounding pale stucco and vibrant green lawn. The water's edge softens the hard lines of the architecture, inviting a continuous dialogue between the home and the tropical air.

The kitchen is conceived as a meditation on craft and material honesty. Walnut millwork — hand-selected for its warm, open grain — runs floor to ceiling, while a generous stone island anchors the room with quiet authority.

Louvered cabinet insets, designed to respond to the humid coastal climate of the Mexican Pacific, allow air to circulate freely through the cabinetry, preventing moisture buildup without sacrificing the seamless architectural expression. Brass hardware and matte-black dome pendants introduce a subtle tension between warmth and restraint.

The coffee bar, designed to harmonize with the kitchen's aesthetic materials, is conveniently located next to the dining room.  A recessed walnut niche houses brass-rod open shelving suspended with architectural precision, set against a field of handmade zellige-inspired tile in tones of sand and stone. Below, a wine cooler and paneled drawers in matching millwork maintain the unity of the ensemble.

The primary bathroom unfolds as a sequence of light — from the intimate warmth of the vanity alcove to the luminous expanse of the soaking zone, where a freestanding tub rests against a floor-to-ceiling steel-and-glass window that opens to a private palm garden.

A walnut vanity — its louvered drawer fronts echoing the language of the kitchen millwork — grounds the room in craft and continuity. Stone-format floor tiles in a warm cream run uninterrupted throughout, dissolving the boundary between zones and amplifying the sense of depth.
